"Canzoni da Ascensore" ("Elevator Songs"): Marco Schnabl's new album is a manifesto against musical homogenization in the age of artificial intelligence

"Elevator Songs," the third album by Marco Schnabl, a music producer and composer with over twenty years of international career spanning London and Italy, was released on January 30, 2026. The album—available on all digital platforms in Stereo and Dolby Atmos formats—is a dystopian paradox that overturns conventions: while music generated by artificial intelligence becomes mainstream, music played by humans risks becoming mere background music. The title is a provocation that becomes a declaration of intent.

A collaborative project "Canzoni da Ascensore" is the result of five years of work and stems from a collaboration with composers Aldo Martino and Antonio Caprara and writer and poet Gaia Favaro, with the aim of creating a collection of songs from an ideal talian Sanremo Festival, diametrically opposed to the contemporary one.

The album features thirteen songs ranging from operatic influences to straightforward pop/rock, with lyrics conceptually bordering on punk. Marco Schnabl was responsible for artistic direction, arrangements, recording, mixing, and mastering. He sang, played drums, bass, guitars, and programmed the orchestrations, while some instruments were performed on some tracks by selected guests: Melga (accordion and piano), Marina Latorraca (wind instruments), Palma Cosa (classical guitar), and Francesco Greco (solo violin).

A "contemporary vintage" sound:

Eighty percent of the instruments are physically played, creating what Schnabl calls a "contemporary vintage" sound. Each instrument plays a subordinate role to the arrangement and lyrics by Gaia Favaro, which constitute the album's true virtuosity. "There are no solos for their own sake," Schnabl explains. "The songs require arrangements that serve the words, not the other way around."
