THE ARTIST'S WAY

ree

There's a book by Julia Cameron called "The Artist's Way", which aims to help all those artists experiencing a creative crisis who need to rediscover themselves and find the drive to express their creative potential. It seems to me the author has set herself a rather bold goal in this book. I don't want to convince anyone of my opinions on the matter in these few lines, but it seems to me that the ocean of texts, of which this one is just a tiny drop, is nothing but a pile of garbage. Not to mention the enormous amount of digital information about every art form imaginable: in theory, we could all become artists, all it would take is spending a few hours a day in front of a computer obsessively devouring tons of YouTube videos. People actually believe it, that's the most disturbing thing. A mass lobotomization with the commercial goal of selling more and more of everything to legions of idiots, and the world is full of idiots.

The truth is one and only one: you are an artist if, by being yourself to the core, you somehow shock people. Salvador D'Ali, Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Andy Warhol, Dante Alighieri, Caravaggio, Picasso, Freddie Mercury, Carmelo Bene — all people true to themselves. To the core. And being yourself has always been the most difficult thing of all, but it's also the ultimate reason for living. Everything else is just noise. Being yourself is already a revolutionary act in a society made of masks and fakes, whether they're artists or not. It's exactly what the artists we'll remember centuries from now had the courage to do, or simply did, without any courage because, ultimately, they couldn't do otherwise. The line between art and madness is therefore extremely thin.

The (hugely ignorant) masses have always confused the concepts of art and entertainment, failing to grasp the profound difference. Art, in fact, is not supposed to entertain. It is NOT supposed to entertain AT ALL. Entertainment is created by individuals far removed from being artists, whose sole purpose is to garner applause for monetary compensation. Entertainment is important for socioeconomic reasons, but art has nothing to do with any of that. Do you want, or rather, feel like an artist? Then be one. Just be yourself. Away with formulas, away with circus techniques, away with focusing on the paying audience. Away with everything. An artist is only an artist when he or she is naked, and being naked is the greatest of art forms, because human beings have always feared the judgment of others, mortifying their essence because of this fear and thus renouncing their own beauty. The artist is precisely someone who does not fear the judgment of others at all because in his madness he cannot even see who can judge him, and this is shocking.

We really need artists again. There is an urgent need in this era when the nefarious American dream-like Fordism has reached the heart of even the musical art form. So, do you feel like an artist? Be yourself to the end. Down to the bottom. And accept the high price to pay in exchange for the priceless feeling of being alive.
